Schmitt Mayor, Green Bay Wisconsin 06/30/2010 - Entrenched in the CommunityJune 21, 2010 The Business News Article Smet Construction Services Corp. – Entrenched in the Community By Lori Kaye Lodes Smet Construction Services Corp.’s long history of innovation, quality workmanship and community involvement have made it more viable than ever in 2010. Smet Construction Services was started as Smet General Contractors under to auspices: to employ innovative thinking and to provide quality commercial and industrial buildings. While the company changed its name six years ago, its longstanding attention to innovation and quality remain unchanged. Today, the company is led by Paul Belschner as vice president and CFO, and Scott Smet, president, who handles business development and customer retention as well. Other key stakeholders include Chad Smet and Shaun Mc Keefry. The 20-member staff at Smet continues to seek and implement innovative techniques as a means of sustaining a high level of skill and workmanship. The company employs these priorities in construction management, complete design-build services, preconstruction planning, general contracting and tilt-up concrete construction projects. Smet also serves as a one-stop shop for all construction management services, conducting all preconstruction planning (including locating land, creating preliminary budgets and completing a site optimization study) as well as coordinating build-to-lease projects. The company has differentiated itself through a number of ways: Process - Smet uses a hybrid of construction management and design-build methods with customers, working one-on-one with the customer before construction begins. The benefits are many but include handling all costing on the customer’s behalf (and ensuring competitive pricing), serving as the point person for all building, and conducting site analysis on the customer’s behalf BEFORE he/she even buys a parcel of land. “With the nature of our business, we may know of a better parcel of land because we work with municipalities all the time,” said Belschner. “And we have a successful track record of getting incentives from multiple sources; municipalities as well as Wisconsin Department of Commerce and TIF funding.” The company acts as a resource, linking clientele to various types of assistance including tax credits and subsidized land costs. In one project, it obtained a 25 percent incentive – savings that trickled down to the customer. People - Smet prides itself on building its company on integrity. “It can take years to build relationships. And in the end, all you have is your reputation,” said Belschner. While it focuses it services with a 100-mile radius, once it’s developed a relationship with a customer, they will travel elsewhere to perform jobs on their behalf. Examples of that include the building the company has done for CVS Pharmacies and NAPA. A stellar example of relationship development is the relationship Smet has with the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. “The Chamber has had a great relationship with Smet that preceded the construction of the Chamber’s new building,” said Paul Jadin, president of the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. “And during the process, they were responsive to changes we needed, delivered on all their promises and continue to be a good organization to work with.” The result is a beautiful Chamber building that blends well into the existing Broadway district on a corner of one of the greatest developments in downtown, said Belschner. Diversification - Smet performs construction for many sectors – office, retail, manufacturing, healthcare – and diversity has been an advantage for the company through the economic downturn. Environmental focus - Smet considers itself a small firm with a large impact, not only because of the vast array of services it provides but also because of its commitment to being progressive in environmentally friendly building methods. Some the methods it employs include the WasteCap process, whereby construction waste materials are recycled. A project using the WasteCap process can divert as much as 75 percent or more of construction waste materials. The company also employs a LEED AP certified person on staff and is working to become and elite partner with Orion Energy Systems, a leader in the natural day lighting and energy solutions. A few reasons the company credits for its success: Focus on education - “We have good people in our roles; that’s what it takes is people who are committed to the same cause. Many of our people have accreditation in variety of areas and pursing that makes the company as a whole that much stronger,” said Belschner. “We have always had a policy to pay educational costs. If staff are going to take their own time to better themselves, we will support them.” Give back - The company has a long-standing commitment to giving back to the community, donating services to remodeling the current United Way building donating services to the Advance Business Center remodel, building the Bay Beach Train Depot and Outhouse Gang restroom along the Fox River Trail, etc. “We are committed to community service. We donated these because they are all community assets and amenities. It’s a company value to get involved in the community,” said Smet. Stay prepared for growth - Smet is staying prepared for industrial / light industrial / machine shop growth in anticipation of the trickle-down effect from Oshkosh Truck and Marinette Marine’s contracts. “We’ve always been strong on manufacturing and warehousing and plan to continue to be,” said Belschner. The company is also focused on medical / healthcare, from clinics to pharmacies. Smet can be reached at 920-532-3828 or smet.com |
