"Topping Out" Ceremony at CityDeck Landing, Green Bay, Wisconsin

Topping Out Time at CityDeck Landing

At the “topping out” ceremony last Friday, contractors on the CityDeck Landing apartment project placed the final wood beam; completing the project’s frame.   Those attending had a chance to sign their names to the beam prior to it’s being put in place. “Topping out” ceremonies, today known as an expression of pride, have long been used to signal the completion of a building frame.  The practice of “topping out” a new building can be traced to the ancient Scandinavian religious rite of placing a tree atop a new building to appease the tree-dwelling spirits displaced in its construction. Trades currently working on the project attended the topping out ceremony that posted a small pine tree to acknowledge the building’s skyward trajectory had reached its total height.
The project, underway since spring of 2014, is the City of Green Bay’s newest luxury apartment complex and  first new apartment project in over twenty years.  Work has now shifted to the interior structural and fill-in framing, followed by  the mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems and interior finishes.
When the project first began, construction crews found abandoned bridge abutments, an old underground asphalt street and a pedestrian tunnel going from previous torn- down buildings to the Fox River. The Smet crews worked through the obstacles and these early onset delays and continued to push through the frigid winter months. Now the excitement builds as the project takes physical shape with people being able to envision how the project will look upon completion.
Smet’s project manager, Patrick Ostroth said, “CityDeck Landing is such great addition to downtown Green Bay.  Coming from Chicago I am used to a downtown living atmosphere.  I think CityDeck will provide this for families and professionals who want to experience a city living lifestyle.  The building itself is  beautiful, from its exterior brick façade and siding to  high end interior finishes. We have a lot of work to do between now and June.  The topping out ceremony is great in that it reminds us to take pride in what we have accomplished thus far and re-energizes our contractors and team for the inside work to come.”
To date, the underground parking is now complete and the first floor retail shops poured. The structural walls for the residential floors have been completed and the exterior brick is beginning. When completed, Green Bay’s newest luxury apartment complex will have several colors of exterior brick, combined with metal detailing for balconies and architectural stone accents to complement Green Bay’s history of architecturally-significant buildings. The 76 residential units will contain wood laminate flooring, luxurious carpeting, stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, high ceilings, large balconies and patios. Extra touches are provided with washer and dryers in all units, over-sized walk-in closets, underground parking and a wellness fitness center.
The project is expected to open summer, 2015.
